Hair in the Face

>

Some kind of strange hair meme is going around. I've been seeing bad hair photos, out-of-date hair photos, and then my favorite -- hair in the face photos.

Here is a photo of one of my kids up at camp Memorial Day weekend. The dock is in a marsh so the water is shallow and muddy, filled with all kinds of weeds and creatures. When you stand at the end of the dock, your feet sink into several feet of soft muck which will rise and swirl all around you. Most of us choose to float in this water, trying not to stir up the muck, keeping our bodies on the surface, keeping an eye out for water snakes and snapping turtles, but Shaggy Hair Boy does not hesitate to push his feet right into all that mud.

I really love your photos! You've inspired me to buy a digital camera and start photoblogging a lot more.

Except that it's supposed to be a photo of YOU with your hair in your face! Mom! jo(e)'s cheating on the meme!

What a great picture!

...

Snapping turtles? Can't you lose a toe that way?

Dafina girl: Thanks for the compliment!

Phantom: I didn't mean to cheat, honest. Don't tell Mom. But I don't have a digital camera: I just scan in photos I already have. I thought it was pretty amazing that I happened to have a shot that fit the meme.

Rana: Haven't lost a toe yet. Our snapping turtles are pretty small and harmless. I love that about the marsh. There's nothing that can harm the kids. They can swim, play in the mud, catch turtles, play with snakes or frogs ... it's all good.

PPB: Don't be too impressed! I've never bothered to put my photos in an album or anything. They are just snapshots, and I mostly just pile them into shoeboxes. I don't take many. I can go months without buying film.

I used to take a lot of slides and then at family gatherings, we would have a big slide show.

Tip jar! Let's get jo(e) a digital camera!

Cool picture. And even though you cheated on the meme, you did go the extra mile and include a narrative to go along with it, so I guess it evens out.

I _knew_ there was something this photo reminded me of.

The summer of my brother's last year in high school, we went on this big cross-country road trip. One of our stops was at a lakeside campground in one of those northeastern states (Maine, maybe). Anyway, at the time, my brother was on the waterpolo team, and was in the habit of taking swims very early in the morning whenever he got the chance. So, this one morning we were starting to stir in camp, and we heard this odd "thwop! thwop!" sound coming from the direction of the lake. We looked out at the lake, which was still and silvery in the early morning light, and this dark head appeared about half-way out, surfacing like some odd lake creature (Dad took video of this -- it's pretty funny). It was my brother, pausing to catch his breath after doing the butterfly.

Am I the only one who gets a kind of freaky claustrophobia from thinking about all that hair, especially wet hair, in my face? Ack!

Kathy,

I actually get freaky thinking about sinking your feet in swamp muck.

I'm not pretty much convinced that I could not go in the water at Jo(e)'s camp. My ick-phobia defeats my love of wilderness. Again.

Rob: We are going to have to go swimming together this summer. That ick-phobia is nothing a good mud and seaweed fight couldn't cure.

Rob: Right there with you, treading water like mad.

Great picture, jo(e)! You've got many talents, because you're a great writer, too!
