Too many people still blame the victims or have the "I would never" attitude. Reading your posts about the shelter work, etc always make me smile - I like to think that had I ever gone to a shelter instead of staying in my abusive marriage that I would have encountered someone like you or your daughter.

It sounds like a beautiful gathering for a great cause.ccwhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05319415763862282537noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9799907.post-1162857076408556062006-11-06T18:51:00.000-05:002006-11-06T18:51:00.000-05:00Very cool event - I imagine it was quite cathartic...Very cool event - I imagine it was quite cathartic for everyone. I consider myself lucky to have escaped such treatment but I am still horrified by how much it goes on and can pervade all socio-economic groups.Mother of Inventionhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03797365678860039018noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9799907.post-1162852855707560222006-11-06T17:40:00.000-05:002006-11-06T17:40:00.000-05:00Oh, my.Oh, my.Yankee, Transferredhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06627693160131161133noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9799907.post-1162840732301004622006-11-06T14:18:00.000-05:002006-11-06T14:18:00.000-05:00My heart breaks that this occurs.Loss for words. My heart breaks that this occurs.

Loss for words.Silver Creek Momhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15062404159303618655noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9799907.post-1162828498374497112006-11-06T10:54:00.000-05:002006-11-06T10:54:00.000-05:00By saying it, well, it makes it easier to live wit...By saying it, well, it makes it easier to live with, that's why we write about it, sing about it, and even draw pictures about it. It's just such a horrific story.

And of course, so much abuse, especially the more subtle forms of abuse, goes on all the time. One of the quotes from the women's shelter that really jumped out at me was this: "Controlling someone is not merely a precurser to abuse; it is abuse."

Or this one: "Intense jealousy is a classic sign of abuse. It's a form of control -- a way to make a possession of the other person."

And yet, intense jealousy and controlling behaviors are still considered normal in our culture and even romanticized by Hollywood. That was what one of the woman was trying to explain last night: she lived in a culture that told her she should find her husband's intense jealousy flattering -- even after he began beating her.jo(e)https://www.blogger.com/profile/01488562158252331555noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9799907.post-1162778489672117192006-11-05T21:01:00.000-05:002006-11-05T21:01:00.000-05:00Don't know if you saw the story on the front page ...Don't know if you saw the story on the front page of Local Paper today but the abuser in that situation was a former student of mine and as cliched as it sounds, I had no idea he was capable of such heinous violent behavior. I'm glad to see people involved in stopping and healing abuse, and this entry and that story inspired me to get more involved and make a donation to the women's shelter you mention.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9799907.post-1162767022106392202006-11-05T17:50:00.000-05:002006-11-05T17:50:00.000-05:00Such a difficult thing to do - thankfully there's ...Such a difficult thing to do - thankfully there's a supportive place for those with so much pain to be heard.listiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03531432035830658570noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9799907.post-1162755567701450762006-11-05T14:39:00.000-05:002006-11-05T14:39:00.000-05:00Kyla says it best.
