At the waterfront

City morning

I spent yesterday morning wandering around the waterfront of Big Midwestern City with the Baseball Team that Always Loses. Little stores on the pier were just opening, but already I could smell fried dough and sausages as I walked by. A group of school kids in matching t-shirts were gathered for a training session: they were about to go out on the four-masted schooner tied to the dock. I was tempted to start talking to the guy in charge of the group, to see if I could join, but I couldn’t bring myself to chat with a grown man wearing a pirate hat.

I’m here in the city with my husband, who is attending a conference. I had planned to spend part of each day getting some writing done in a quiet hotel room, but so far the weather has been so glorious that instead I’ve been wandering about the city. And as I watched boats coming and going from the pier, I began thinking that maybe I should be out on the water instead of inside with a computer.

Heading out for a sail

Joe, sounds like you are enjoying your trip.
I have a question for you.
Am thinking about a trip to the Catskills, and have read about your visits to that area on your blog before. Wonder if you have any recommendations on a nice place to stay with smallish kids (two of them, 6 and 8)? We will be visiting a camp in the southwestern edges of Catskills, but would be happy to stay anywhere within about an hour or so away.
Would love to hear any thoughts and advice...
Thanks!

Neighbor Lady: I'm afraid I can't be of any help. The mountains I write about are the Adirondacks, not the Catskills. I haven't spent much time in the Catskills, but I've heard good things about the area. I hope you have a great visit!

Teri: I should have done a better job planning meet-ups before this trip began -- I'm only here for another day. Email me if you are by chance free tomorrow ....

Hi jo(e),
Thanks anyway--I think with the stories about your Dad and his music-making I somehow assumed Catskills. Well, the Adirondacks you write about sound truly lovely--hopefully I'll get to them someday soon too!
Hope you have a great rest of your trip!

"I couldn’t bring myself to chat with a grown man wearing a pirate hat" - now that's a sentence I never thought I would hear from you, jo(e). I'd have guessed in seven minutes flat you'd be taking pictures of him with his clothes off (except for the hat, of course).

Pilgrim: Well, maybe if he'd been a little older, I would have. But this guy was about the same age as my oldest son, so that would have been weird.

And besides, he didn't have any red lingerie hanging from his shoulder. What kind of lame pirate costume is that?

Oh, that's pretty sad. Not even any math medals?
