The scary Jesus barn

The scary Jesus barn

During the roadtrip I took with Artist Friend this summer, we drove through the midwest: lots of flat farm country. When we passed a scary Jesus barn, I insisted he stop so I could take a photo. I'd never seen anything quite like it.

Love moments like this, where you happen upon something strange and interesting, and as an atheist I have a soft spot for scary religious stuff, too. Beautiful photo by the way.

Really something to look forward to, eh?

A sight that stands out, that's for sure. Interesting, weathered details with the peeling paint, missing pieces of wall and kudzu-type growth up the side.

Love it for its "decay & desuetude" crumbling-ness, and that beautiful shade of blue

Hate that they mis-spelled JUDGMENT.

Question: is the barn doing the Judging? Because if it is I'm good! LOL!

Beautiful stuff. Where I live there is stuff like this all over, but en Français!

When I was in 4th grade, I lost a spelling bee to a 6th-grader because I put that "e" in "judgment". Some dictionaries allow both, but our culture is failing due to such permissiveness.

Home sweet home!

Shouldn't it be red rather than blue?

Love this, jo(e). I remember stopping for you to take a picture of the Scary Jesus church!

Songbird: That's where I got the phrase! I just loved it when you kept referring to the Scary Jesus Church.

Hard to believe that lovely afternoon was four years ago ....

Jennifer: Definitely!

There are two giant, homemade billboards on somebody's farm halfway between Cincinnati and Columbus with the 10 Commandments on one side and "Hell is Real" on the other. I love that one. And halfway between Dayton and Cincinnati there was "Big Butter Jesus" (Google it!) who unfortunately burned down after a lightning strike in '10. It was an act of God, I think. But we miss him around here. There's nothing like mixing fundamentalist church with over-the-top advertising to let you know you're in the tri-state area of KY, IN and OH. Next time you come to town, we'll visit the Creation Museum! I love the little model of Noah's Ark with a dinosaur curled up in it. They're even building a Noah's Ark theme park right next to it!! (I wish I was kidding, but I'm not.)

I don't think Jesus has anything to do with this sign.

I didn't even notice Jesus the first time, but he's on the left side, holding a sword! Great pic.
