Ten minutes before it was time to leave for the spring concert at With-a-Why’s school, he said, "Oh, yeah. I am supposed to wear a costume."
I am so used to this sort of announcement that it didn’t even startle me. "What kind of a costume?"
He thought for a minute. "I am supposed to dress like it’s the seventies."
The seventies? Apparently the kids were singing Boogie Fever and Build me up Buttercup and Ain’t Nothing But a Hound Dog and Another One Bites the Dust.
I was a teenager in the seventies, and I think I just wore the same clothes I wear now – jeans and t-shirts. But With-a-Why rummaged confidently through the house and came up with a strange wig, a boa, and a dangling scarf that he's been wearing everywhere lately.
Apparently that’s what the cool kids in the seventies wore. Clearly, I hung out with the wrong crowd ....

Actually, I think that's much more The Cure 1985 than the 70s.
But you know how it is, all those decades start to run together...
Any excuse to wear the wig...and why exactly do you have a strange wig and a boa hanging around your house in the first place?
Love the look, love the pose.
Heh-heh-heh. Fab.
Most excellent wig, photo, and intepretation of the 70s!
And special props to jo(e) who can remain so calm 10 minutes to departure. I know you'd been there but still.
what psycho kitty said.
Although, it is sort of George Clinton/Funkadelic/Parliament=ish.
Or maybe Elton John-ish (with the right glasses...)
Maybe he watched an old re-run of the Mod Squad.
Uh-oh, Jo(e), I hate to say it but...he's getting really big!
What a great kid.
I just spit on my monitor.
kind of looks like cruella de ville...
Bridget: I think the wig and boa *are* leftover from a Cruella de Ville costume. Our house is filled with all kinds of dress-up clothes and props, though, so I am not positive.
Yankee: Yeah, he seems to grow overnight. The other two boys are way taller than me now, and he will likely shoot past me in the next couple of years. He is losing his little boyness rapidly ....
I'm with Psycho Kitty -- that's decidedly 80s -- but he still looks fantastic.
Hey that's a great costume! How was the concert? Did the other kids have such great costumes?
Lately I've been craving one of those skin-tight polyester cap-sleeved dresses from the 70s, ala Saturday Night Fever. They just felt soooo good.
Hilarious.
Love that kid. He is too cute.
Cloudscome: Oh, the concert went fine. The costumes were all pretty random. Some kids went for the jeans and white t-shirt look -- that's more of a fifties look, I think, but most kids do own a white t-shirt and a pair of jeans so it was at least an easy one.
I love the idea that you had a wig like that in your home!
