Quiet beginning

Round Lake

While the teenagers in the house were still sleeping this morning, my husband and I decided to sneak out of the house for some time to ourselves. We began the year with a quiet hike around Pretty Colour Lakes. It's been unseasonably warm, ridiculously warm really, and we didn't even need mittens as we walked the trails. The lakes aren't frozen yet, and the trails, normally filled with cross-country skiers this time of year, were muddy. We took advantage of the warmth to find a bench in the sun where we could sit and talk about the year that has just passed and our hopes for the year to come.

Happy new year, jo(e). Like so many of your posts, this picture made my blood pressure drop and my unconsciously-clenched muscles relax. Thanks for that!

How sweet. I wish we could have done that a little better! We did ttake a walk, though, though Detroit Metrobeach isn't quite as pretty as Pretty Color Lake.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and yours!!! XOX

Miss you!

Chip: I was just writing you an email and commenting on how weirdly warm the weather has been, when your comment chimed in.

We are supposed to start snowboarding on Sunday. I hope we get some colder weather before then. Snowboarding on mud just isn't the same.

The river up here simply hasn't been freezing over. It didn't freeze over last year either. Although I'm pretty sure I complained my first two winters in the North Country, I have actually been missing the frigid weather.

Also, although I know that it is difficult to impossible to scientifically bridge the gap between a long term global trend and a couple local winters, I still blame global warming.
