Home for the Summer

Even though Snowstorm University, where my daughter goes to college, is not very far away – and is in fact right next door to Small Green College, where I work – it is still a world apart from the house where I live. During semesters, I keep in touch with her through phone calls, and instant messenger, and Friday lunches, but it’s not the same as having her in the house.

Tonight, I picked up my Smart Wonderful Beautiful Daughter and brought her home for the summer. At this very moment, she is back in her own bedroom (well, sort of her own – she shares a bed with With-a-Why) unpacking all her worldly possessions. The unpacking won’t take long since all her worldly possessions fit into a few laundry baskets.

Her brothers are flocking around her. When she came in, Boy in Black pushed back his long hair so she could inspect the black eye. Shaggy Hair Boy is showing off on the piano. With-a-Why keeps trying to get her to identify quotes from Futurama. Spouse is talking to her about a father/daughter trip they will be taking this weekend.

But tomorrow, they will all go to school or work, and I will have her to myself.

Your youngest and your eldest share space? There is room for the detritus of little boyness together with the stuff of college girl? I'm impressed. Of course, could I expect anything else from your family? The one I keep asking to be adopted into?

Even though I moved away 15 years ago, I still have a breakfast get together with my mom whenever I visit my hometown. It's the highlight of my visit. We just sit and chat over coffee and breakfast goodies at our favorite pancake place.

Hope you and your daughter have something wonderful planned. It’s great that you two can share some special time together.

PPB: The whole house is pretty much shared space. With-a-Why has a small closet in the boys' room for his clothes and stuff, but he goes to sleep in my daughter's room because the older boys stay up later than he does.

We will happily adopt you whenever you make the trip to Snowstorm region.

My daughter calls these 'girl days'...our next outing will include a manicure, lunch out, ice cream, the playground, and a nap. Yours could too!

I think that's awesome that you look forward to spending time with your daughter so much. Even if she doesn't now, some day, she'll definitely appreciate it.
