Almost

New

Outside, ferns unfold, leaves burst from lilac limbs, and dandelions pop up on my lawn.

But the semester isn't quite over yet: I'm still grading portfolios, meeting with students, answering emails, writing an annual report, and sitting at long meetings where it's getting increasingly difficult to concentrate.

Another week, and I'll be free to roam the woods.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a cashier at Whole Foods yesterday. Out of the blue, she said, "Did you know there's a thing called fiddleheads?" And I said, "Yes, I've heard of them, but I've never eaten them." After she wondered in amazement at this item once more, I said, "They're a type of fern." And then she asked me how you eat them. I don't really know, but I said, "I suppose people saute them."

I think boiling them helps get rid of the bitterness -- just like with milkweed heads.

(I've never actually eaten fiddleheads, but I've eaten lots of milkweed.)

Ianqui, I thought at first you wrote, "I suppose people salute them." Which is sort of what jo(e) has done, eh?

I tried fiddleheads once. I expected something light, plain and green, but there was a lot more depth of flavor than I expected, sort of like overcooked asparagus. I didn't like them, actually. They're beautiful though.
