My mother's tulips

My mother's tulips

Every year, as soon as I'm done with my classes, my parents take me out to lunch. Sometimes we drive out to the lake, where we can watch the waves crashing against the piers. This year we ate in a restaurant the next town over. We sat in a booth, eating french fries, talking about summer plans, and catching up on family gossip. It felt luxurious to relax in the middle of the day, without having to look at my watch to see which meeting I need to be at, which class I need to teach. After lunch, I took photos of my mother's tulips. After a long white winter, I can't resist all the bright splashes of color in our spring landscape.

oh, they're gorgeous!

i had lunch today with a longtime colleague and friend. he had a story of taking in a relative and then her kids, of ups and downs, she was doing well and teh family kind of got on its feet and moved out, but then more things happened. and the kids were kidnapped by the non-custodial parent; she knows where they are, but things remain unresolved.

the long story reminded me so much of biker boy and ponytail girl. my hope, and my friend's, is that the time all these kids had in a more stable environment will help them, long-term. both of us have stories about how much it means when a kid has stable adults to rely on, sometime or another.

That sounds like a great tradition. And the tulips are lovely.

Aw, it looks like the Blogger Debacle erased all the comments folks left admiring your Mom's tulips. Do we need to all say them all over again?

Yeah, it look like all the comments got wiped away. But at least Blogger is working again. I think that's the longest it's been out since I started blogging.
