Makes Me Want to Scream: Part Two

I hate it when the word BABYSITTING is used to describe a man taking care of his own children.

When my kids were very small and I had papers to grade, my spouse would take them out for the afternoon on a Saturday so that I could grade papers in peace. Sometimes he would stop to see his mother. She would later tell everyone how wonderful he was to babysit the kids. BABYSIT? They are his kids! Her assumption, of course, was that watching the children was the woman's job, and a man who takes care of the kids for a few hours should be praised to the skies for helping his wife out.

Sometimes, I wonder if this crap will EVER change. Sigh.

Oh, yes -- this one really burns me, too!

I'll chime in with a "mee too" on this. For sure. What's worse is when I have to ASK my husband to babysit. When the F does he ever ask me?? Huh?

Right on. Along those lines, but veering into "beyond the pale" territory - several years ago, my SO's mother was in remission from brain cancer, and was at home on disability leave gaining strength. During that time, SO's father cooked for the family. When I mentioned this to my father, he commented that it was SO GOOD of my SO's dad to do the cooking. I guess he missed the "in sickness and in health" line. Anyway, makes me hope that my father dies before my mother does; God help her if she ever has cancer and can't cooking for herself.

(Found you through...eh, some academic blog, I forget.)
