Modern Compliment

I've spent the day reading through my student’s reading journals. The first book they read was bell hooks' Bone Black. One student wrote that she loved the book so much that she has been using quotes from it as her Away Messages on Instant Messenger.

I guess nowadays that is the highest compliment an author can get.

I know it is when #1 Son does it!

And I know it is when my family has actually read the book in question. :-)

One of my students told me that her away message was that she was busy getting pissed off by Freud, whom we're reading in my gender studies course.

Another example:book quote as a tagline that gets used on one's Salon postings.

Who...me?

(sheepish)

But seriously, I love bell hooks. I'll have to read that one.

Revmom: It's different than her other books. Bone Black is a memoir, the story of her childhood. It's very lyrical, very unconventional. Definitely worth reading.

That is actually pretty funny.

I was so pleased when a student of mine started including in her email signature a quotation from Owen Wister's The Virginian, which we read in class last term. High compliments indeed!
