From the dessert list

Dessert list

I guess if you are going to eat hot spotted dick pudding, it's best to have it with custard.

The question is: are you going to order some?

Well, my husband managed to keep a straight face long enough to ask the waitress what the heck it was. But then he went for the chocolate gateau instead ....

Hot Spotted Dick with Custard sounds a wee bit like a nasty case of VD. And that never sounds tasty.

Speaking from experience: it's really good!

And once you get accustomed to the country, you can ask for it with a straight face. :)

They really do do things differently over there, don't they?

Trust me, if you order any sort of pudding over there, it's best if you get custard on top. I don't know what it is about the Brits... The vegs are all mush and the desserts are all dry.

When my husband was on a temporary assignment over there, his office had "gateau day" once a month (cake = petit four, gateau = layer cake) and they took it in turns to provide the cake. When it was his turn it just happened to fall around Wimbleton fortnight which meant strawberries were available, so I made one of my faves -- four layers of white cake, with chopped strawberries and whipped cream as the filling, frosted with whipped cream and decorated with strawberry halves. You have to refrigerate it b/c of the whipped cream, and the longer it sets the more moist it becomes, so I made it two days before he had to take it in. I had a heck of a time finding a cake mix over there and I damnear overbeat the whipped cream (I use Cool Whip on this side of the Pond), but I managed.

They devoured the whole damn thing in one go and pronounced me a baking goddess. When I evinced surprise at all the acclaim, my husband informed me that most of the monthly offerings were so dry he wouldn't eat them.

I am still a little confused about what exactly this dessert is. I googled it and found several recipes calling for suet, which just confused me further. I think of suet as bird food. I've got to get out more!

Thanks for the laugh.

I was reading the most recent posts first, so I didn't see the picture of the chalkboard until after I read the post above. When I came to the part about "spotted dick pudding," I thought, that's a really weird and embarrassing typo that jo(e) made, I guess I should discreetly let her know...

Sergei gave me some spotted dick at Christmastime. The dessert, that is...it was lovely and sweet.
