Breakfast with Bloggers

Later this week I am heading to the FourSeas Conference in the Big Midwestern City with the Baseball Team that Always Loses. In a fit of technological confidence, I am bringing my laptop computer so that blog readers can hear the wildly exciting things that happen when composition teachers get together to talk about pedagogy. I bet you can hardly wait.

We are planning a blogger meet-up: Thursday morning at 8:30 am in the lobby of the Hotel that Kind of Reminds me of the Titanic. So if you are reading this, and are planning to be in Big Midwestern City with at Least One Very Tall Building, come meet me for breakfast.

I promise to tell stories about other FourSeas Conference. I can tell you about the time I danced with Peter Elbow. Or the time I showed naked photographs of myself at a session. Or the time I made everyone in the audience at my session put on blindfolds. Or the time I got lost wandering around a conference city and ended up at a heavy metal concert. Or the time a bunch of us at a workshop duct-taped ourselves together. Or the time my colleague Poet Friend danced on a table with a red rose between his teeth singing, "I want to have text with you."

Or we can complain about how much we hate grading papers and talk about blogging. Anyhow, here are all the details:

CCCC blogger meet-up
8:30 am Thursday
Lobby of Palmer House

And here is what I look like, so you can find me. I will be wearing jeans and some kind of plain shirt. Maybe a brown blazer if I am seized by a sudden desire to look academic. Send me an email if you need any more details.

awwww, SO jealous! Duct tape something (or someone) for me, would you?

Pilgrim: I'm sure we won't find a bar in Chicago as nice as yours.

Friday Mom: I always have fun at conferences. The strange thing is that I haven't been kicked out of any of these organizations yet.

I don't know what the word pedagogy means myself. I just like to throw jargon around when I am at a conference. That way, I can pretend I fit in.

Wish I could join in, too...!

jo(e),

I will be there (at the Four Seas) and if all goes well, I will try to be in the lobby at 8:30.

However, I am not a morning person. :(

I'll be in touch later.

friday mom and jo(e),

We ALL pretend what pedagogy means, especially when we hear it for the first time.

I'm a teacher, so I'm sure I'm supposed to know what pedagogy means. But what I really want to know is how I can hang with jo(e) at my next conference. Sheesh! I've never had that much fun either, Linda!

I am super tempted, because I live in that big city (with at least TWO tall buildings, I'd have to say, one of which is way more fun than the one that gots the department store name)but 8:30 in the morning is waaaaayyyy too early, especially during spring break. But who knows, maybe i'll surprise you, myself, and everyone who's ever known me by getting up and on a 7:30 train. If anyone's worth it, it's you Jo(e)!

well, I should be there, although it'll be a second breakfast for me as I already have 7:00 breakfast plans. Mornings are no problem around here.

You definitely have way more fun than I do at Cs, jo(e). I date mine more by the restaurants I go to with the same people every year, which is fun, just not quite the stuff of bloggable stories.

I'd decided not to do anything conference related, but now I don't know. Hmmmmmmm.....

I'm going to try to be there, Jo(e)--but, like many of the others, I'm no morning person!

If I don't catch you Thursday morning, will you be at the blogging SIG on Friday evening?

jo(e) said...

Deb: I won't be at the blogging SIG because I am committed to another SIG that is being held in that time slot.

I should definitely be at the dance Friday night though -- perhaps all the bloggers who say they aren't early morning people ought to plan to meet up at the dance.

Should I bring my green "I blog" sign to the dance?

Nels: We promise not to use the word pedagogy if you come. I'll even leave off the blazer and act like a Chicago tourist.

I think, for fairness sake, you should post those naked photos of yourself. Hey, we're all like a conference, aren't we?? I'll even dance with a rose in my mouth...!

Fun. I want to go!

(cheesehead pouts)

Crud. I live one relatively short train ride away from Titanic Hotel, but must do Jesus-y things on Thursday morning.

Sigh...and I actually looked up "pedagogy" the first time I heard it. How much of a dork am I?

Deb said...

If I don't see you bright and early Thursday, I'll definitely look for you (and other bloggers) at Friday's dance!

I want to read whatever you write.
I hope the blogger meet-up goes well.

This is me trying to figure out if I could drive 10 hours to meet you for breakfast! Probably not, but I am green with envy.

I so wish I could be there!!!!

Have a great time!!!

Poopers. I have to work Thursday, and it's too far to drive in an afternoon. :(

(Otherwise, I'd be there. 5-6 hours isn't too long a drive...)

Looks as tho you suffer from the shoulder tension common to people who use laptops a lot!

jo(e) said...

Elsewhere: I don't think the shoulder tension is from using a laptop. I think it's from the teenage photographer who kept saying, "No, hold the sign over to the right more, I mean the left, I can't really read it, move closer to the wall, hang on a minute, no, I'm not done yet, just hold it up another minute ..."

jo(e), you big tease!! I was at work when I read your post through bloglines, but my firewall blocks Flickr. I was so excited to actually be able to get a visual to see if it matched up with how I imagined you that I made a special note (actual paper note!) to remind myself to look up this post from home.

Denied. Bah, and I'm jealous about the blogger meetup too.

JEALOUS.

Sarah Sometimes said...

First time I haven't been to the Cs in about 13 years.... I will miss seeing you there! Have fun and give my regards to the big midwestern city.

jo(e) said...

DaniGirl: I just emailed you a link to a real photo of me.

Sarah Sometimes: It will seem strange to not see you at the CCCC. Who am I going to dance with Friday night?

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Some day, some bloggers are going to need to come to a conference on Vancouver Island. Or even in Vancouver. I'd ride the ferry, to meet-up with bloggers.

Andrew Purvis said...

I really need to get hooked into this conference thing, but it's a real pain as an adjunct. Nobody's gonna pay for the part-timer to pop off to Chicago or anyplace else that requires airfare.

Well, maybe people will do stuff in the Seattle region after I move.

jo(e) said...

Andrew: I was an adjunct when I first started coming to the CCCC, and I was able to get funding from my institution. My supervisor argued (successfully) that adjuncts and junior faculty need funding more than senior faculty do.
